Honda recalls over 320000 Odyssey minivans due to rearview camera water damage

Honda Odyssey minivans from model years 2018 through 2020 are being recalled due to a significant manufacturing defect that can cause the rearview camera to fail completely. Over 320,000 vehicles are impacted by the issue, which stems from water intrusion into the camera assembly following housing cracks caused by misaligned mounting screws.

The core of the problem traces back to two manufacturing errors involving original equipment manufacturer Magna Electronics. The camera boss hole was inadequate for the fastening screw, and positional variations during assembly created structural stress that caused the camera housing to crack over time.

As normal exposure to the elements and thermal cycling took effect, microscopic cracks expanded, allowing moisture and water to reach the internal circuit board. This moisture accumulation triggers corrosion, ultimately leading to the total failure of the federally mandated backup camera display.

Owners of affected vehicles will receive official notification letters as repairs are slated to begin in late August. Dealership service departments will replace the recalled Magna-manufactured camera with an updated Sony-manufactured version completely free of charge, with service times estimated around three hours.

Understanding the Recall and Repair Process

Safety recalls involving vital driver-assistance components like backup cameras highlight the complex engineering challenges automakers face during large-scale manufacturing. The rearview camera mandate has proven vital for preventing accidents, making prompt remediation essential for maintaining vehicle safety standards.

Dealerships nationwide are preparing for an influx of appointments as notices go out to owners across the country. While the replacement process and necessary recalibration typically require about three hours of labor, service wait times may vary depending on local dealership volume.

Honda has assured customers that all parts and labor associated with this safety campaign will be fully covered. Vehicle owners can verify if their specific minivan is impacted by checking their vehicle identification number through official regulatory databases or dealer portals.
