Alex Albon has signed a one-year contract extension with Williams to continue driving for the team until the end of the 2027 Formula 1 season. The British-born Thai driver's current deal had been set to expire at the end of 2026, but he has now secured his future ahead of the sport resuming after its summer break with the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend.
Albon has scored just five points during the opening 11 rounds of the season, with Williams performing well below expectations following the introduction of new regulations at the start of this year. Despite the team's ongoing struggles on the track, the 30-year-old driver has chosen to commit his medium-term future to the Grove-based outfit.

"One tough year doesn't tell the full picture, and it only gives me more motivation to keep building and pushing together with the factory and our fans to achieve great things."
The 2027 campaign will mark Albon's sixth season with Williams and his eighth overall in Formula 1. Having recently reached a milestone of 100 races for the team, Albon remains focused on helping the squad navigate its current performance dip and climb back up the Constructors Championship grid.
Carlos Sainz Uncertainty Remains as Williams Looks Ahead
Williams team principal James Vowles expressed enthusiasm regarding the extension, highlighting Albon's integral role within the team's ongoing development project. Vowles noted that retaining one of the grid's most respected racers underscores mutual confidence in the long-term project and future direction of the team.
While Alex Albon has locked in his seat for next year, the future of his current team-mate Carlos Sainz remains completely uncertain. Sainz's contract is set to expire at the end of 2026, and the Spanish driver has previously voiced doubts about staying with Williams amid their current competitive difficulties.
The short-term nature of Albon's new agreement may also highlight a cautious approach given the team's performance under the current technical regulations. Williams currently sits near the bottom of the standings with just 11 points overall, despite utilizing the powerful Mercedes power unit.
Albon originally entered Formula 1 with Toro Rosso back in 2019 before a brief stint with Red Bull Racing. Following a year out of a race seat in 2021, he successfully rebuilt his career after joining Williams ahead of the 2022 campaign.
