Volvo is reportedly considering the launch of a new all-electric station wagon and sedan in the United States by 2028.

New Electric Models in Development
Automotive News reports that Volvo is weighing the return of mid-sized cars to the American market. A source briefed on the discussions stated that both a sedan and a wagon are under consideration. These vehicles are currently being developed for the European market.
The new models would likely adopt the traditional -60 or -70 branding used by the company for decades. Volvo might also introduce a rugged Cross Country variant to appeal to American buyers. This version would compete directly with high-riding wagons from Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
Filling the Polestar Market Gap
The timeline coincides with changes at Polestar, another brand owned by Volvo parent company Geely. Polestar will exit the United States market after the 2027 model year. The new Volvo Electric Vehicles could fill the void left by these outgoing models.
Geely originally intended to target this market segment with the Polestar 2 and Polestar 4. The new Volvo cars will share technology with other group products. They will utilize the third-generation Scalable Product Architecture, which also underpins the upcoming EX60.
Low Volume Expectations for US
Volvo must make a final decision soon because the projected debut could happen within 18 months. However, the company does not expect these cars to sell in massive quantities. Internal projections suggest a modest sales target for the region.
The report claims Volvo projects just 10,000 annual combined sales in the US for these mid-sized models. This strategy shows the brand remains focused primarily on its high-volume electric SUVs. The Station Wagon will remain a niche product for enthusiasts.
