New Strategy For European Growth
Péter Szijjártó announced his career transition through a public statement on social media on July 15, 2026. The former diplomat praised the Chinese carmaker as a prominent success story in the modern automotive world.
He stated, "BYD is one of the most successful companies in the Automotive Industry over the past 20 years and a global leader in new energy vehicle manufacturing." He added that he will immediately begin his new executive duties handling group external relations.
Deepening Strategic Relations With China
The appointment highlights the growing corporate ties between Hungary and Chinese new energy vehicle manufacturers. BYD previously started building its first European passenger electric vehicle production plant in the southern Hungarian city of Szeged in 2024.
The Hungarian government and the Chinese manufacturer also signed a strategic cooperation agreement last year. This deal secured the establishment of the carmaker's official European headquarters and a dedicated research center in Budapest.
Supply Chain Hub In Europe
Hungarian state officials have repeatedly backed major Chinese manufacturing investments to bolster local businesses. The local government expects the partnership to act as an economic engine during the current global automotive technology transformation.
Numerous suppliers within the Chinese electric vehicle supply chain have set up manufacturing bases across Hungary recently. Battery industry giants such as CATL, EVE Energy, and Sunwoda are currently building large production facilities in the country.
