Volkswagen electric vehicles are entering a new era of connectivity as Samsung expands its Digital Key function to numerous EV models across Europe. Owners of compatible Samsung Galaxy smartphones can now effortlessly lock, unlock, and start their vehicles directly through their mobile devices without needing a traditional physical key.
"The integration of Samsung Digital Key into Volkswagen electric vehicles represents a major step forward in modern automotive convenience and tech accessibility," said industry analysts monitoring the European electric vehicle market rollout.

SubscribeThe new feature leverages Samsung Wallet to store the digital car key securely. Once configured, the smartphone allows seamless access to the vehicle, including opening the trunk and sharing temporary access permissions with friends or family members securely.
Functionality varies depending on the device model specifications. Galaxy smartphones equipped with Ultra-Wideband technology offer automatic detection when approaching the vehicle, while NFC-compatible devices require a quick tap near the door handle.
European Rollout and Software Requirements
Security remains a top priority for both manufacturers. Samsung notes that digital keys are safely stored locally using the Knox security system and comply with Car Connectivity Consortium standards, with remote deactivation available via Samsung Find in case of loss or theft.
The official deployment of the Samsung Digital Key feature began on August 18, 2026, rolling out across 37 European countries including France, bringing modern smartphone integration to everyday drivers.
However, compatibility is restricted to specific vehicle configurations. Only Volkswagen models equipped with software version ID 6.0.1 or higher can support the new digital key integration.
Vehicles running older software versions will unfortunately miss out on this initial wave, prompting dealerships to encourage software updates where available.
