Smaller Formats Face Sudden Closure
The Swedish retailer is shutting down its South Charlotte and Austin-Domain locations next month. These smaller sites offer design consultations for kitchens and rooms alongside order pickup services.
Customers can still book planning appointments at these locations until the official closure date. Ongoing projects must be completed or transferred before the sites shut down.
Shifting US Retail Strategy
The closures are part of a broader plan to build a more accessible and sustainable future in the US. Ikea stated that it is investing heavily in home delivery and online experiences.
An Ikea spokesperson said, "We continue to test, explore and develop new ways for customers to meet Ikea." The company hopes this shift will make shopping more affordable.
Alternative Options for Local Shoppers
Customers can still visit traditional full-size Ikea warehouses in both regions. The main Charlotte store and the Round Rock location near Austin will remain fully operational.
Ikea first launched this specialized planning format in early 2023. The company currently operates about 32 of these pickup locations across 14 states.
