Williams F1 team principal has admitted the team faces an immense challenge as they prepare a major car redesign for the 2026 season. The Grove-based team has struggled with a late and overweight car this year, leaving them eighth in the championship. Vowles compared the rebuilding process to fixing an airplane while flying it.

A Major Redesign For Azerbaijan

The team plans to introduce a heavily modified B-spec car at the Azerbaijan in September. This package aims to address fundamental issues with the overweight FW48 chassis. Drivers and will have eight remaining races to lift the team from eighth in the standings.

Vowles acknowledged that a mid-season overhaul of this scale is a massive undertaking. He stated that the team must prove they can manufacture high-quality components during the racing calendar. "Effectively the equivalence of flying the plane and rebuilding it at the same time," Vowles said.

Struggling With Process Systems

Williams is currently trying to establish modern manufacturing and design processes that rival teams already possess. The top four teams have pulled away in 2026 because their underlying structures were already mature. Vowles explained that Williams still lacks these highly efficient system processes.

The team principal noted that they are struggling to do what other established teams can easily achieve. He compared their situation to Aston Martin, which is also attempting a major mid-season turnaround. "I know what efficient organizations look like, and even today we are struggling," Vowles admitted.

Winter Delays Proved Costly

A three-week delay during the winter development phase severely disrupted the construction of the FW48 car. Vowles revealed that the team flagged the critical data far too late to make proper corrections. This delay caused a cascade of scheduling failures across the entire manufacturing pipeline.

The team has used the crisis to learn how to manage and scale their operations facility more effectively. Vowles believes these painful experiences are necessary to build a competitive team for the future. "The amount of changes we have made have put us into a very good situation," Vowles said.
