Anatomically, the carpal tunnel is a rigid osteofibrous compartment situated at the base of the palm, bordered by the carpal bones and the transverse carpal ligament. Nine flexor tendons alongside the median nerve traverse this narrow space, making the nerve highly susceptible to elevated compartmental pressure from swelling or structural changes.

Risk factors associated with the development of the condition include repetitive strain, prolonged wrist extension or flexion, vibration exposure, and high physical hand force. Additionally, demographic and systemic variables such as female biological sex, obesity, and thyroid disorders are recognized contributors to heightened susceptibility.

Genetic determination plays a prominent role in individual vulnerability, with genome-wide association studies highlighting multiple genomic loci linked to the structural likelihood of developing the syndrome. Furthermore, rare hereditary neuropathies can significantly increase a patient's baseline risk of experiencing nerve compression symptoms.

Management and treatment strategies range from conservative approaches, such as corticosteroid injections and wrist splinting to alleviate temporary pressure, to surgical release of the transverse carpal ligament for advanced cases. Early identification and intervention remain essential in preventing permanent nerve damage and preserving hand function.
