Severe dust storms fueled by worsening regional droughts and aggressive desertification are threatening the daily lives of more than five million people in Iran, according to recent environmental assessments. The crisis, largely migratory in nature, draws massive particulate matter from neighboring countries like Iraq, Syria, and Jordan before settling heavily across Iranian provinces.
"The lack of humidity, dry environment, low rainfall, and annual droughts are primary drivers behind this intensifying environmental threat," environmental officials note, highlighting how transformed local landscapes have turned into active dust centers.

Government bodies and specialized initiatives like Project-Dust are scrambling to understand and mitigate the expanding crisis, pointing out that tens of millions of hectares nationwide are now vulnerable to severe wind erosion. As climate pressures mount, developing effective cross-border and domestic control measures remains an urgent priority for protecting public health and vital infrastructure.
Tackling Particulate Pollution and Urban Dust
Beyond large-scale environmental storms, urban centers face continuous air quality degradation driven by vehicular traffic, industrial emissions, and construction activities. Road dust generated from tire wear, braking systems, and exhaust deposits contributes significantly to the heavy atmospheric burden of particulate matter.
"Engine exhaust emissions and construction activities produce a large amount of waste and fine particles that easily become airborne," experts explain, emphasizing the challenges faced by densely populated urban areas and industrial zones.
Municipalities increasingly rely on mechanical street sweepers, vacuum-equipped vehicles, and specialized suppressants such as water or vegetable oil sprays to keep fugitive dust under control. Meanwhile, stricter environmental regulations require construction projects to implement comprehensive dust mitigation plans before obtaining planning permissions.
Public health officials continue to stress that reducing exposure to fine particulate matter is vital, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals suffering from chronic respiratory conditions.
