New York has paused large AI data centers due to power grid limits, sparking warnings from critics about losing ground to China.
Grid Concerns Drive New York Freeze
Governor Kathy Hochul signed an executive order banning large new data center construction for up to 1 year. She defended the move by pointing to heavy strain on the state electrical grid.
Hochul explained the Energy impact during a recent public address. She stated, 'A giant data center, that one 50-megawatt center... consumes as much power as 50,000 homes… I've got an Energy grid that is already overtaxed.'
Critics Warn of Global Tech Risks
Lawmakers and Energy officials argued that restricting computing infrastructure could drive investment to other regions. Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman reacted to the policy with a stark warning on social media.
Fetterman warned simply, "China wins." Industry experts cautioned that Artificial Intelligence development requires rapid expansion of server capacity across the nation.
Energy Leaders Dispute Official Stance
Energy Secretary Chris Wright rejected the state governor's argument regarding power shortages. He suggested that tech facilities encourage power investment rather than hurt it.
Wright criticized the administration's policy directly. He stated, "Gov. Hochul has it exactly backwards. Data Centers are the greatest tool we have right now to stop the rise of electricity prices and ultimately to bring them back down."
