Geely has unveiled its highly integrated Thunder 16-in-1 electric drive system, triggering debates over maintenance and thermal challenges.

From Integration to Intelligence
The new system combines 12 hardware modules and four software systems into a single architecture. Geely says this design reduces external connection points by 30% and keeps the drive unit height under 325 mm.
A unified computing platform replaces separate controllers to speed up processing times. The company states this One-Chip architecture cuts response latency to below 2 milliseconds compared to the industry average of 40 milliseconds.
The Thermal Challenge
Extreme integration creates significant engineering demands on thermal management. Different components like motors and power electronics must operate under varying temperature conditions within the same housing.
Geely installed a 54-channel directional cooling architecture to handle the heat. The manufacturer claims this layout doubles thermal dissipation efficiency and lowers peak operating temperatures by 15°C.
The Integration Trade-Off
Industry experts have raised concerns about how tightly connected components will affect long-term vehicle servicing. The Automotive Commercial Review questioned how parts with different lifecycles would be maintained over time.
Manufacturing these complex systems also requires tighter coordination during assembly and software calibration. Geely will initially deploy the system on models priced above 250,000 yuan before expanding it further.
