Arsenal sign Tottenham defender Elijah Upson
Arsenal have agreed a long-term deal to sign 18-year-old centre-back Elijah Upson from rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Elijah Upson has agreed a long term contract to join Arsenal from north London rivals Tottenham.
Romano confirms north London switch
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement for the young defender on Saturday morning. Romano used his trademark phrase "here we go" to signal that the formal agreement has been signed.
The teenager decided to turn down Tottenham's recent contract extension offers to join the project at Arsenal. He will sign a long-term deal with the Emirates Stadium club, with an official announcement expected soon.
European giants miss out on teenager
Several top European clubs closely monitored the young defender before Arsenal secured his signature. Premier League rivals Chelsea and German giants Bayern Munich both expressed serious interest in the player.
Tottenham pushed heavily to keep the academy product within their ranks this summer. However, the player chose to move across north London to continue his professional development.
Following a familiar family path
The young defender is the son of former Arsenal and England international centre-back Matthew Upson. Matthew Upson made 57 appearances for the Gunners and won the Premier League title during the 2001/02 season.
The senior Upson later played for Birmingham City, West Ham United, and Stoke City after his time under Arsene Wenger. Arsenal supporters now hope the younger Upson can achieve even greater success at the club.
