Tesla has spent years keeping its heavy-duty electric Semi as a largely American affair, despite the company repeatedly signaling ambitions well beyond the United States. That status quo is finally about to change as the company prepares for its biggest European commercial push yet.

Tesla has officially confirmed that the electric Class 8 truck is heading to Germany for the IAA Transportation exhibition in September. More importantly, this appearance will not simply be another European showcase for the vehicle; the company says it will use the event to reveal precise specifications and launch details for the European version.

The high-profile trade show takes place in Hannover from September 15 to September 20, putting some long-awaited answers only weeks away for fleet operators across the continent. Exactly when European customers will be able to officially order or receive delivery remains unconfirmed, though industry watchers speculate a potential 2027 rollout.

"Specs and launch details for the Semi in Europe to be unveiled at IAA Transportation in Hannover, Germany," Tesla announced through its official social media channels, igniting excitement within the commercial logistics sector.

European Rivals Await Tesla's Heavy Electric Truck Entry

Germany

Tesla initially unveiled the truck back in 2017 and began putting early builds into commercial service in the United States in 2022. Full-scale production of the updated model subsequently kicked off at Tesla's Nevada facility earlier this year, paving the way for international expansion.

Tesla is entering a European electric-truck market that has already moved forward considerably without them. Legacy commercial-vehicle manufacturers have been actively developing and selling their own battery-powered heavy haulers while the Semi remained exclusive to North America.

One of the Tesla Semi's most formidable competitors will be the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600. Mercedes claims up to 560 km of range from its 621-kWh battery, placing the German manufacturer directly in the territory Tesla hopes to conquer.

Because European trucking regulations and operating conditions differ significantly from those in the U.S., simply importing the American specification is not an option. Key metrics such as payload capacity, range under local testing standards, charging compatibility, and pricing will be critical.
