Metropolitan Police deploy live facial recognition cameras across London streets to target wanted offenders

The Metropolitan Police have apprehended more than 100 wanted criminals during the first few months of an innovative pilot programme deploying live facial recognition cameras onto street furniture.

Since October, live facial recognition systems have been mounted to structures like lamp posts in Croydon and monitored remotely for the first time across the capital, according to the Metropolitan Police.

This strategic shift enables officers to run targeted deployments without traditional mobile vans, leading to 103 arrests so far, with a third of those detentions involving offences related to violence against women and girls.

Notable apprehensions during the rollout included a woman wanted for an assault in 2004 who had eluded authorities for over two decades, a kidnap suspect, and a sex offender accused of breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Privacy Concerns Arise Amid Surveillance Expansion

Despite operational success touted by law enforcement, the surveillance technology faces fierce pushback from civil liberty groups and regulatory bodies questioning the legality and ethical framework of the deployments.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission previously criticized the Metropolitan Police policy on live facial recognition technology as unlawful, warning it could create a chilling effect on individual rights during public protests.

Civil rights organisations such as Big Brother Watch have similarly condemned the initiative, arguing that expanding automated surveillance transforms urban spaces into open prisons.

In response to mounting public scrutiny, government ministers launched a consultation to explore tighter regulation, privacy protections, and the establishment of an independent oversight body to monitor police biometrics.
