Gene Haas ultimately decided to end Steiner's tenure via a brief phone call while the former team principal was shopping for groceries at a local supermarket counter.
"I was at the deli counter picking up my ham for the night, or salami, and my wife was with me," Steiner recalled regarding the unexpected moment that concluded his leadership role.
Rather than sparking dismay, the abrupt decision brought an immediate sense of relief because it completely aligned with his growing frustration over the team's strategic direction.
"I was even happier the next morning when I got up because a new world opened and I just wanted to move on in life," Steiner added, having quickly transitioned into punditry and team ownership.
