Federal safety regulators have officially escalated their scrutiny of Ford's popular three-cylinder engine, moving from a preliminary evaluation to a rigorous engineering analysis that could ultimately pave the way for a major vehicle recall.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Office of Defects Investigation expanded its probe on July 31 to cover an estimated 135,551 vehicles, including certain model years of the Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus, and Ford EcoSport equipped with the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine.

At the heart of the investigation is Ford's use of a wet timing belt system, which places rubber toothed belts directly inside the engine crankcase where they are constantly bathed in hot motor oil for quieter operation and improved fuel efficiency.

However, investigators found that the rubber material can degrade over time and shed debris directly into the oil sump, eventually clogging the oil pump pick-up screen and starving the engine of essential oil pressure.

Regulatory Pressure Mounts As Ford Faces Scrutiny

Consumer complaints and agency data reveal that these critical failures frequently occur well before the manufacturer's suggested replacement interval, leaving many motorists facing catastrophic engine failure without adequate warning.

Compounding the issue is the physical design of the engine assembly, which makes inspecting or cleaning the blocked oil pick-up screen exceptionally difficult and often requires removing the entire engine from the vehicle.

The federal escalation comes despite Ford's recent launch of a global customer satisfaction program that shortened the recommended replacement interval and offered financial reimbursement to affected vehicle owners.

Regulatory officials noted that customer satisfaction programs carry distinct limitations, expiring over time and lacking the strict compliance reporting required of mandatory safety recalls administered through federal databases.
